DESCRIPTION:At HBUF we’re not just about trees. Each year the flowers dotted around the forest and in our wildflower meadow bring a bit more colour and beauty into our strolls through the fields and trees. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLast year we came together to plant more than a hundred sunflowers\, the national flower of Ukraine. As well as being gorgeous\, the birds and bees will love them\, and they made a wonderful sight throughout the summer months. \n\n\n\nAfter a fantastically successful first year\, which has attracted such a lot of positive feedback\, and with the war still going on in Ukraine\, we have decided to do it again this year\, and we’d like you to be a part of it. \n\n\n\nWe want you to help by growing your own seedlings and bringing them to become part of our sunflower garden when are ready to plant-out. We have some simple advice on how to grow them here. \n\n\n\nJoin us at the Miyawaki Forest from 1pm. If you don’t have your own sunflowers\, don’t despair\, you can still join in – we have plenty of extra plants we need help with! \n\n\n\nNo special equipment required\, we’ll have forks and spades handy\, though a trowel or hand fork might be useful. \n\n\n\nPlanting is simple enough\, a small hole to transfer your plant into\, along with the soil it’s currently in\, then a bit of a water to help it along. If you’re feeling strong\, you can help us ferry water from the brook. \n\n\n\nIf you’re driving\, be aware that the Southbrook Playing Fields car park isn’t under our control and may not be open\, but we’re a short walk from any of the local Pinehurst and Gorse Hill streets.

From planting to trees and taking care of the inhabitants to driving the tractor. \n\n\n\nThat will be followed by a chance to get hands-on\, building some ‘dead hedging’ to protect some of the local wildlife\, and improving the habitat for some of our smaller residents. \n\n\n\nIt’s a great opportunity to get involved if you haven’t been out with us before\, or to reconnect if you haven’t visited for a while. \n\n\n\nYou can register on the Big Help Our web site\, or by RSVP’ing below.   \n\n\n\nThe session will be from 1pm-4pm. Join us when you can\, for as long as you like. \n\n\n\nWe’ll be looking to improve the biodiversity of the site by taming some of the blackberry bushes that dominate the Ballman field to the east of the site. A study recommended that we cut them back in sections\, doing a quarter each year\, to vary the habitat and introduce new life to the area. It’ll also reveal the trees that were originally planted in the area\, so we can see them in all their glory. \n\n\n\nGloves are a must and thick trousers recommended to keep thorns at bay. Sturdy secateurs or loppers would be handy\, though we do have some you can use if you don’t have your own. \n\n\n\nWe’ll meet at the top of the picnic field to kit up before heading out. If you plan to join us later then you’ll find us next to the Celtic Tree Circle.

Sue & Andy will be there for 9am. \n\n\n\nIf you want to still come along at 10 then that’s fine\, there will still be plenty of balsam to get rid of! We’ll keep going while people are happy to do so\, with a cut-off at 12. \n\n\n\nLast year we cleared the Himalayan Balsam along the section of the Hreod Burna that runs through HBUF. It’s an invasive species that has taken up space usually occupied by native plants. \n\n\n\nThe work we did last year has made a big difference… there’s a lot less this year but we still have work to do! \n\n\n\nThis year we are teaming up with the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust to make sure it is removed along the entire length of the Burna. \n\n\n\nThis is the first of two sessions to clear the Balsam from our section of the Burna. \n\n\n\nWe’ll meet at the container at the top of the picnic field at 9am. We’ll be working west from the Cricklade Road end if you arrive later\, just follow the stream 🙂 \n\n\n\nWellies recommended\, waders a distinct advantage!

Sue & Andy will be there for 9am. \n\n\n\nIf you want to still come along at 10 then that’s fine\, there will still be plenty of balsam to get rid of! We’ll keep going while people are happy to do so\, with a cut-off at 12. \n\n\n\nLast year we cleared the Himalayan Balsam along the section of the Hreod Burna that runs through HBUF. It’s an invasive species that has taken up space usually occupied by native plants. \n\n\n\nThe work we did last year has made a big difference… there’s a lot less this year but we still have work to do! \n\n\n\nThis year we are teaming up with the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust to make sure it is removed along the entire length of the Burna. \n\n\n\nThis is the first of two sessions to clear the Balsam from our section of the Burna. \n\n\n\nWe’ll meet at the container at the top of the picnic field at 9am. We’ll be working west from the Cricklade Road end if you arrive later\, just follow the stream 🙂 \n\n\n\nWellies recommended\, waders a distinct advantage!

As much as we love them\, we do need to keep the paths and fields open to the good folk of Swindon! \n\n\n\nWe’ll meet at the container at the top of the picnic field at 10am. \n\n\n\nThey don’t always go quietly\, so dress appropriately to avoid getting too many stings and scratches!
